First off, a quick check... try loading WordPad, and left-button-dragging one of the '.DAT' files onto WordPad, specifically, NOT notepad, but WordPad (Write in Windows 95 and some early versions of Windows 98) in this case.
If the files don't come up as anything remotely readable, then the explanation is very simple. They got saved in YIM's "internal" log format, instead of as a flat text file. It would require some tinkering to get YIM to read the log files again, but yes, I believe it could be done. It's not something I've done before with this specific set of circumstances, but I don't think you've lose anything at all, it's just in an akward file format at the moment. =^.^=
