Thing is, it doesn't look to be in direct 'competition' this time...

...but much more of an 'grown up' version of the original movie. Still zany and chaotic, but not as forcefully lighthearted at places. Much like comparing "Transformers: The Movie" to the normal "Transformers" TV show from the same era. The 'Movie' included things like death, violent dismemberment and suffering afterwards, etc, while the TV show tended to severely gloss over similair topics to keep the show kid-friendly.

The original CatCF's Willy Wonka wore a deep purple coat and tophat, this looks like a nod to that, if nothing else.
