Though I dislike how... aggressive some anti-gun-control campaigners are, the core sentiment I believe in, currently, in North America specifically. Gun control only guarantees that the criminals have better firepower than those they prey upon, giving them a huge advantage.

Seperately though, the core sentiment of the phrase, the 'Hell no we won't give up and leave our duties behind just to save ourselves!' sentiment in there, much like the catch-phrases, "Let's roll," from 9/11, are a tiny, compact little power-house of emotion that is useful to examine, and perhaps wear on occasion. =^.^=

And all this from someone that doesn't own a single firearm, I might add. :-)

As is said on a rather telling bumper sticker, "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns."

I'm not a huge proponent of gun-toting freaks and the like; they're just as whacked out as every other splinter group to me. But there is certainly something to be said for being able to carry open firearms with only a safety course permit being required. It would and does drastically cut down on the number of crimes.
