Grr... worst 'upgrade' ever, Nintendo.
Jun. 6th, 2007 05:58 pmI was enjoying Mario Party 8.
Until the owner of the system/game went in and unlocked/purchased the 'Heckling Voices' upgrade, and proceeded to make Wario (his usual character) more-or-less chant/scream "Ha-Ha, Losers!" and other similair things non-stop for the first five minutes of the next game.
I walked away, threw down my personal controller in disgust on a chair as I passed. Apparently I shut the Wii off when I did that, but I just don't care. Worst upgrade ever, and no way to disable it once you get it.
I was planning to buy a Wii and a copy of that game myself, but now I'd honestly be too worried about some dipship sneaking in and purchasing that 'upgrade' and making me have to reset the entire game data periodically just to shut it the hell back off to want to waste my funds.
And I won't be playing it again in any case, since Nintendo didn't even put in any sort of a limit to how often you can 'taunt/heckle' in MP8 either. Once in a'while, like if you're the victor at a minigame getting more aggressive taunt-phrases with that option enabled, sure. But constantly being able to spam the damn things? Hell no.

Date: 2007-06-06 11:52 pm (UTC)Our house is all about the heckles and irritating taunts. It fills us with laughter. But that might be the vodka talking.
Every so often, sure.
Date: 2007-06-07 12:17 am (UTC)As I said, taunts when you win a mini-game or what-not? Sure. But never pausing the taunts to speak of in the first two turns of a game when the main board was up? And only using the loudest taunts possible? Yeah... that's a bit over the top.

Date: 2007-06-08 08:06 am (UTC)Basic psychology. If you want someone to stop doing something, don't give them any kind of response. They'll get bored, or at least be less encouraged to play with it.
As far as spamming it/playing with it /right/ after he unlocked it on his own console, it's more than a little arrogant to say that he can't do what the hell he wants. Five minutes or an hour. Or a day. Or a month. He laid out the money, so it's his bloody call, not yours.
Probably would have calmed down and gone back to playing normally pretty quick in fact, after he'd gotten bored with it. But some people have this in-built urge to poke when someone's throwing a fit. It brings about a pleasure response for them, as they see it as teasing and funny, no matter how aggravating it might be.
Generally if they're friends, you can say something like 'could you please stop that, it's really getting on my nerves' and they'll stop. That or make it worse, at which point you do simply walk away and find something to do, rather than engage in dramatics. And then air the laundry.
It's fucking MARIO PARTY. Seriously, dude. Perspective.
To give an idea of how long he kept doing it...

So I walked away, and took my Wiimote with me since it was one I'd bought to use with my laptop and brought upstairs to join in since I'd enjoyed MP8 the previous times we'd played it. The only other thing I said was as I went back to the laptop to do my own thing was, "That's it, I quit," and, "Don't care, but sorry for the inconvenience!" when they were like, "WTF?!?" when the Wii shut off after I left.
And having to 'pointedly ignore' something is not my idea of entertainment. I came upstairs, stopped everything I was doing, to join in on what I thought was a fun/goofy round of minigames and bad luck on the board movements, like usual.
