No, I didn't use the stupid computer-based voting system.

I don't trust them, and I build them for a living. I know just how fallable they are.

So I asked for a paper ballot, got a very interested/amused look from the staff (young, male geek wearing sandals, t-shirt, ragged jeans in a subcompact car, carrying a cell phone and PDA, asking for a paper ballot?!?) until I said, quite flatly, "I build and program computers for a living. I don't trust them to have the only copy of my vote."

That, and there was a 20-minute wait for the computer-ballots, while both 'paper' booths were empty and unused, so I was out of there in under 5 minutes. When I left, the paper booths were being used evenly as well at that point, so I think I turned the tide, so to speak, at least for a moment. :-)

I went to the polls early. They opened at 0700, and I was there...in a huge line...by 0705. I waited 45 minutes to vote, with the standard paper ballot. I was talking to one of the candidates outside afterwards and asked why he was always at this polling center, and he commented it was the biggest one.

Next time, I vote after work, the way I usually do. Then it's just the 5 minute affair, or less.

We're using mashines in Nevada that print out a paper trail for you to review before you hit the "I'm done, that's what I want" button. We don't get to keep a copy, but at least there's a printout you can verify before you vote.

That said, I tend to trust the machine more than the people, because people can 'lose' ballots or throw them away, etc etc etc. . .
