Grr... I'm pissed off.

Basically, if you use the newer, and MUCH nicer interface (available here but don't click anything) to customize your LiveJournal accounts layout... you lose access to many, many features that, while trivial, are now paid-only features.

Yes, it's minor to not be able to customize the 'Leave a comment' text, or not being able to adjust where some stuff is positioned, or the font used... but goddess damnit it's annoying to suddenly have a very well-built, straight-forward interface for editing a journals layout... and have them disable features from all non-paid accounts if they want to use the newer interface. And it's a decision I hope they change.

Livejournal stats, as of when I'm making this post:

*Total accounts: 1015219
* Free Account: 947277 (93.3%)
* Early Adopter: 14173 (1.4%)
* Paid Account: 50872 (5.0%)
* Permanent Account: 1590 (0.2%) (yay, I'm one of the leet few)

5.2% of the users have paid. 5.2. Percent. Only.

I think it's completely fair for them to disable things like this in the new interface, honestly, I think it's nice of LiveJournal to allow free users to do many of the things they do, as opposed to asking for them to pay, or slapping a banner on top of their journal or something else to help them cover the phenomenal amount of money and time that they put into this project.
If you want to play with the new interface and play with all of the features, get a paid account.

And don't even get me started on when LJ was thinking about imposing post limits and all of the free users went crazy.

I know this sounds a little harsh, but I'm cranky tonight.

Yeah, I appreciate that it's a free service. :-)

It's less the removal and more the lack of notification of this removal being a price to pay for the new style system. I know I can't complain that much, since I'm not a paying user yet, but I like a little warning when I go to switch to a new interface that switching to it will disable existing modifications.

That is what bit me in the rump. I had to roll back a conversion to the new style system because I couldn't keep any of my existing changes except the colour scheme, which were few enough to begin with.

And as soon as I get back from BayCon, I'm buying a year or two of LJ regardless. I guess my original post was pretty poorly-worded though, you're right. It comes off as more pissy than I intended, which is probably because I made it after spending a while using the new customization interface... then having to manually re-build with all those wonky override strings again from scratch when I switched back. =-.-=

And Gah... I wish they'd get a permenant account sale again, but I'm hardly an exception I bet. :-)
