Sat down since it's POURING rain right now off-and-on, and am working out an extendable vehicle-combat system... it's a little complicated for tabletop use except in 1-on-1 or similair situations, but it's actually quite simple for the base mechanics, has shrinking-returns for larger investments in a single point, but can still favor a focussed-design ship over a 'jack of all trades' econo-box of the same point value.

It has a definate relative in IronClaw-style mechanics as a modern tie, increasing die size to a point, then add another die and climb again, and 'die rolls' compare the values rolled highest-first on each side to tally up points for one side or the other.

Damage is the trickiest part to explain, but it's not that bad once you understand it... basically, it's a lot worse to attack with a 'powered down' item that's damaged, than to just start unloading with whatever the gun's capable of doing most of the time. So once your proverbial cover is blown, start shooting full-power since you have the same penalty if you keep the power-level low as if you ramp back up to full power at that point.

Only real problem is the mechanics are simple and clean, it's going to be harder to build a good table of multipliers for point-costs, which are akin to MekTon Zeta or Champions or similair. Everything has it's powered based on the number of points invested in it, but some things physically cost 1 credit for every point, others may cost 50 credits for every point, for example. I need to figure that part out still...

So it's a clean core mechanic, with a complicated cost-equation since calculating costs is a one-time affair for the most part compared to the number of times you have to use the calculated values.

Slid out coming home. Was behind a car on an offramp so no, I wasn't going fast at all. 405 North, Brookhurst North, 30mph turn, was going 25-30 and it had started raining (light mist, the worst rain type for driving) when a squirrel decided to end it's life by diving between me and Mr. Eggshell Generic Midsized Car.

Bad reflexes I do possess include trying to dodge a foreign object coming at the side of my car suddenly.

On the wide left turn, I made a sudden sharp right, lost traction on... I think only the front wheels, interestingly. I was able to 'rudder' the car back straight, but then I hit a 'thump' and the back end slid out the OTHER way, pointing me out towards the outer edge of the curve again without enough room to get back on the road.

So, squirrel got his wish, I went off the embankment, slid down the ice-plant on my passenger-side, at the 75-degree section of the embankment the car slipped off the wheels entirely at which point I sat back, released the steering wheel, killed the engine, and covered my face with my arms and ducked, expecting the car to roll over onto it's roof, all the glass to implode, and me to end up stuck that way, wishing I'd had time to drop the seat back first.

Car _did_ roll very neatly onto it's roof... and it didn't even buckle the roof, just slid along quietly, caught the dirt ditch just before the fence with the driver-side, which stopped that part, and basically rolled the car almost vertical again, at which point I 'sat down' as hard as I could, and a moment later the car was... well, trying to be upright again, all the glass intact (even the already-cracked windshield took no further damage) dropped up on all four wheels on the chain-link fence.

About 90 minutes later, the car was winched backwards along the fence until it 'drove down' itself onto the dirt, then power-assisted back onto the road.

Total damage? Shitloads of iceplant wedged in EVERY orifice, including a wad I shot out of the exhaust pipe when I turned over the engine. And both front quarter-panels and the front 'hood latch cover' panel took a beating, but other than that the car is actually unharmed as near a I can tell. Still drives very straight, still shifts as smooth a ever... I blame it on the fact the car weighs about 1200lbs total, and the roll was very slow, and onto a very cushioning substance.

On a side-note... just found the stack of XMas cards folks had sent me... And I have to ask, [livejournal.com profile] dingo_? Is that virtual mistletoe redeemable? =^.^=

Sorry, I'm just a little desperate for some humour right about now. But at least the squirrel is dead... or I saw the bloody tail, so if it's not dead I'm awfully surprised and think it's about to die. So someone got their wish, apparently.

And [livejournal.com profile] kattything? I'm going to be at FC, by hook, crook, or other insane method. No matter what. =^.^=

A friend just got a new car.

His old car was only worth $200 to the dealership.

So, I got them to wait before getting rid of it.

Anyone ([livejournal.com profile] arylkia and Si? Or have the truck problems been cleared up?) want a Toyota Corolla (A.K.A. Levin) for around that amount? It runs fine, only problem is that is has some kind of slow leak in the coolant system. It's a manual transmission, and a good car with very easy, sharp shifting. I don't have the mileage handy, but I'm posting this wide-open to draw in nibbles, or get outside input on this...

If nobody else claims it, I'll be looking into snagging it until I find someone else to get it. I don't need three cars, and unfortunately the Levin/Corolla is the only car I don't have a very deep-seated reason to keep that goes far beyond monetary ones.

BTW, [livejournal.com profile] drewkitty? I got your message, I'm just too all-fired busy between keeping my job and saving up for FC to return your calls, since right now it's a 2-hour drive to and from where I'm staying, so I get to work for 8, drive for 4, and sleep most of the rest. I'm at-post (or just awake) between 10pm and 6am pretty much every day, feel free to hit my cell-phone from midnight to 4am with abandon, or a little before or after that if you don't mind me putting the phone down with near-zero notice when something comes up I have to deal with. I do have the money for you though, all of it, in one lump sum. And I'll be doing the homework over Monday/Tuesday, to post Wednesday evening.

...directly from working my normal post, I'm going to be rushing back to Mark's place so I can sleep in his van while he drives to another job site I'll be helping at...

So, 8 hour shift of normal work...

Then a 3-4 hour nap.

Then anywhere between 4 and 12 more hours of work.

Woot for paychecks!

...I'm starting to think it wasn't tiredness that made me as ill, incoherent, and made me have such a total breakdown on the road trying to drive Mira to one of her Mom's places in Mt. Baldy.

It's icky... )

...I fnid myself on both sides of a proverbial fence.

A position I seem to keep finding myself in. Friends with both sides of a problem, and trying to be there in a way to give support to the collapsed of the two sides...

Sometimes, things need to fall, before they can be rebuilt. But sometimes... they just need to be proped up, until they can support themselves again.

This seems to indicate the 1-650cc-rotor design is $5k. So... 75hp engine in a 14x13x15-inch space that weighs 80lbs (including the cooling systems and what-not), for $5k. Figure another $2k to adapt the transmission linkages to the new engine. So, $7k to drop about 300lbs off of my car, bump HP from 65 to 75.

That's actually tempting. Going to actually e-mail them to find out if they have cheaper prices any time soon, since they just announced getting a partnership to produce about 10-million engines a year for something-or-other hush-hush. =^.^=

...new rims, $210 for six. Yes, six. Plain, black, surprisingly light-weight, steel rims.

New tires, $40-$50/each for six of them instead of the $60-$70/each they cost right now, and they'll be equivilant tires.

Yes, I'm engineering things sideways to my final goal again. I'll be studding two of said tires, and keeping them as dual-purpose 'spare tires' and 'snow chains' rolled into one during winter months, and by the time summer comes around I'll buy another two rims (for eight total) and get non-studded tires on those when I get my wheels rotated just before studded tires become illegal for six months to use in California. (Can use them surprisingly freely during Winter months, but not during Summer months, for understandable reasons of damage to the road.)

The CostCo tire guys have officially told me I have the absolutely wierdest car, and when I told them some of what I plan, they actually asked me why I planned to keep buying tires from them instead of from a 'custom' shop. And when I explained that, I think I honestly made their day to know that someone thought so highly of their service and customer service to pick them over the hundreds of alternatives out there. Though they thought my 'ignition' was so wierd they all took time to come over and stare. *laughs* The wonders of needing a key to get into the car, but not to start or drive it around. Just wait until they no longer need a key to get into the car. =^.^=

But yeah, I'm going to actually have the wonderful option of leaving a flat at CostCo to get repaired, and still have a spare tire while they fix that one, so I'll have zero waiting at all without having my car. Which just rawks on toast. =^.^=

*murrrrrr*

No, I didn't use the stupid computer-based voting system.

I don't trust them, and I build them for a living. I know just how fallable they are.

So I asked for a paper ballot, got a very interested/amused look from the staff (young, male geek wearing sandals, t-shirt, ragged jeans in a subcompact car, carrying a cell phone and PDA, asking for a paper ballot?!?) until I said, quite flatly, "I build and program computers for a living. I don't trust them to have the only copy of my vote."

That, and there was a 20-minute wait for the computer-ballots, while both 'paper' booths were empty and unused, so I was out of there in under 5 minutes. When I left, the paper booths were being used evenly as well at that point, so I think I turned the tide, so to speak, at least for a moment. :-)

...but I finally figured out what was wrong with my previous idea of 'Evil Genius' for the interior-design of my car...

I was thinking 'Modern' evil genius. I.E. Austin Powers-styled, 60's-themed Evil Genius. Lots of plastic, metal, and primary colours. The primary colours and plastic were just Not Quite Right, but I couldn't figure out why, because the basic idea of the theme was dead on...

Then, I realized what I've been doing with my car from square one, when I made the conscious choice to get a pull-wire-based rear hatch release instead of an (arguably more effecient) electronic rear hatch release installed so I can remove the rear lock cylinder entirely. I'm trying to step back before the days of heavilly electric, augmented construction. To the days of steam, hydraulics, and gas engines at their infancy, much like my Civic is one of the first years, before the car became well-known and when Honda was still experimenting with it.

What era has been the focus of too many modern 'take over the world' schemes in comic books, movies, and other places, that focussed on mechanical machines, wood, leather, and metal everywhere, etc, etc? Steampunk. But not just 'generic' steampunk. Old West Steampunk.

Suddenly, the entire inside and outside just 'gelled' near-instantly in my head, what stuff goes where, how the dash will look, what the seats will look like, what to change on the outside of the car, etc, etc.

Just thought you all should know what my plans are now. :-)
wolfwings: (civic)
It's not much, but this is approximately the body work I'll be doing to my civic, though I'll be adding some kind of external hatches to the rear side panels, and the rear hatch as well. So, I made the LJ icon over there for any talk about progress on my car work. :-)

Lots of links to the California Vehicle Code, and ramblings about some sections inside. )

Just the first pass at researching the California Vehicle Code to look out for 'gotchas' in my plans for the Civic. So far, things look good. Now to try to see if there's a way to legally install something like polycarbonate AR sheet instead of tempered safety glass for the remaining windows, or a way to otherwise remove that one last 'weak point' of the entire vehicle...

The following just happened this weekend.

My car was parked at a JCPenny's parking lot, just outside the Employee Entrance.

All five parking slots around it (two to either side, three across the berms) had cars in them.

When it was time to go, police tape surrounded all six previously-mentioned parking spots.

My car was the only one still there.

Why? Because the interior is completely stripped out right now. Key broke, so doors are unlocked, ignition is removed entirely as is the steering-column cover, revealing that all the wiring has been removed and pulled off the column. (It's mounted under the dash to switched and buttons currently.) The seats fold perfectly flat, and I do that when I get out right now, then throw a blanket over top of them, so it looks like the seats were stolen too (and the back seat IS gone, by design) so... apparently the car looks pre-stripped, so the thieves ignored it.

Just wait until I get the rear glass replaced with steel panelling, and the front glass with non-silicate transparent laminate sheets.

BTW, finally got my registration stickers. Now to wait until the dries enough to put them on the license plates. Probably just in time for my custom plates to show up. What plates? WLFWNGS

Oh, and I have a job interview on Thursday. =O.o= Probably for $10/hour at a graveyard-shift job. *squee*

Long story short, I'm done in the Bay Area, but have nothing planned to do until Wednesday, when I pick up [livejournal.com profile] chaoswolf from school so we can hang out for a while before I head back down south.

Anyone out there want to hang out? Unfortunately, I lost most folks cell-phone numbers, so I'll need folks to call me first this time. (951)255-3953 [livejournal.com profile] kattything? [livejournal.com profile] thespatula? [livejournal.com profile] jonasbagel? [livejournal.com profile] mira_fastfire maybe even? =^.^=

Anyways, you all take care. If nothing else, I'm up here in time to hit Cluck-U (again) amusingly, so that's goodish at least. And yes, I disabled comments, because I won't have access to a computer most of the time to check them. So call me instead, or use LJ's built-in text messaging tool if you don't want to run up your phone bill. :)
