Welcome to the Draft in 2005, just after the election, and Sweden-style required-military-or-related service for all those 18-26 if current bills in Congress go through. And guess what? They've already enacted extra blocks between US<->Canada to make moving to Canada an invalid way to avoid being drafted.

[livejournal.com profile] rose_quoll? You're not the only one thinking about Australia more actively now, hon. I'd wager a LOT of people are now.

The Draft and un-retiring.

I read that from a local fur's post. I guess I'm not overly surprised to see it. And, I guess I won't be more surprised to see it come to pass.

There's discussion and actual stuff going on where retired military are being called up again. An acquiantance who worked on the retired Apache helicopter recieved notice that he would be called back up to active service if they pulled the Apache out of mothballs.

I hate to be this blunt...

...but I'm glad I invalidated any future military service (as far as I know anyways, I have, for myself), and if this does come to pass...

Welcome to Vietnam, part duex. Unfortunately, I have no doubts that the noisiest complainers will be the first drafted, since they have many years of improved tracking technology to track folks that attempt to dodge said draft-call to continue protesting.

I'm not going to take any chances though... I don't care what it takes, if this comes to pass... I'm gone until I'm past the point of being drafted, just in case I'm not invalidated. I don't agree with this 'war' that will never, ever end, even if we do win in whatever countries we're in now. Nor will I fight for this so-called war on terrorism.

Invalid?

How would you be invalidated as a draftee?

First off... the obvious part is I'm bisexual at the very least. With decent male tendencies.

Second off... I had epilepsy when I was younger, enlisted, 'forgot' to tell them that until short after they gave me my 'show up now to go to boot camp' date, THEN told them and got a summary discharge. As far as I know, I'm invalid for military service ever again, as I scored so high on their tests it's silly. Basically, I aced the basic test, then a secondary test, and finally the crypto test, and had to go through the stupidity of enlisting and getting discharged to get them to stop calling me every single fucking day to enlist. They were as bad as some telemarketers.

Well, I suggest that if you get called up, you let them know up front what your sexual preference is. Having epilepsy may not disqualify you for service at a certain point in the draft process. You may simply be assigned to duties on a base in the US where you could recieve treatment for epilepsy should something happen.

That has always been true. They did that for Korea back in the early fifties, calling back up several WW2 vets.

Yeah, it doesn't surprise me. But, for the most part, it's not something terribly familiar to many folks today. My grandfather's generation, from WW2, are slipping away from us.

What does bother me, however, is that those vets who are still around, and were promised things like free medical and perscriptions and dental when they enlisted, even after they retired, are having those promised benefits taken away, or eroded. WW2 vets and their spouses were supposed to get free 'scripts and medical and dental...well, the dental benefits are completely gone now, and they want to charge a co-pay now for 'scripts.

Actually, it doesn't just bother me, it offends me.
