Welcome to the Draft in 2005, just after the election, and Sweden-style required-military-or-related service for all those 18-26 if current bills in Congress go through. And guess what? They've already enacted extra blocks between US<->Canada to make moving to Canada an invalid way to avoid being drafted.

[livejournal.com profile] rose_quoll? You're not the only one thinking about Australia more actively now, hon. I'd wager a LOT of people are now.

The Draft and un-retiring.

I read that from a local fur's post. I guess I'm not overly surprised to see it. And, I guess I won't be more surprised to see it come to pass.

There's discussion and actual stuff going on where retired military are being called up again. An acquiantance who worked on the retired Apache helicopter recieved notice that he would be called back up to active service if they pulled the Apache out of mothballs.

I told Stephen that I planned on letting my US citizenship go when I got my Australian (you actively have to request to keep it dual), and he seemed shocked, telling me that it was a huge step, and that I really should think more about it....

I'm not coming back here. I hate this place, have for years, and the feeling is culminating.

Well personally I feel a draft is a bad idea, not that I believe serving one's nation in a military capacity is wrong at all, but that an army of professionals who (and here is the key) volunteer is far superior in morale and ability then an army of conscripts.

I wouldn’t qualify myself, but I certainly do not feel others should be drafted, unless the US itself was attacked by another nation, like in 1941.

I certainly think drafting women is wrong, call me old fashioned but the idea of forcing women in harms way, in combat roles is seriously twisted. Imagine someone’s mother being made to be soilder….

While i'm not planning on dodging the draft i am planning on moving up to canada at some point as that is were most of my friends and my current bf is at the moment. Oh well here's hoping for the best.
